Director of Religious Exploration (DRE) 

The Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation (TUUC) is a vibrant and growing community in South Tacoma. This is an exciting time for us as we continue to deepen connections and live out our values in a post-COVID world. TUUC offers a wide range of programs, services, and opportunities for engagement that reflect our commitment to community, justice, and spiritual growth.

Since April 2023, our Religious Exploration (RE) programs have been steadily rebuilding, guided with care and dedication by parent and congregational volunteers. Over the past year, we have seen our youth attendance and programming grow stronger, with weekly all-ages classes and a nursery for children ages four and under.

We are now entering a new chapter of growth. Beginning October 5, 2025, TUUC will launch a Youth Group for ages 11–17, begin Our Whole Lives (OWL) classes for Kindergarten–1st grade, and open a new children’s library to support exploration, learning, and connection for our youngest members. These additions mark an exciting step forward in nurturing the next generation within our congregation.

In August 2025, we welcome Shawn Pruit (he/him) as our part-time Director of Religious Exploration.

Shawn Pruit is honored to serve as the Director of Religious Education. A lifelong learner, Shawn is currently completing a Bachelor’s in Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His journey in Unitarian Universalism has been shaped by years of volunteering with youth programs and Our Whole Lives (OWL), experiences that deepened his passion for helping children and youth explore their faith, values, and sense of belonging.

Shawn’s ministry is rooted in the belief that instilling UU values in our youngest members is one of the most meaningful ways we can shape a more compassionate and just future. He finds joy in creating spaces where children feel safe, curious, and connected to one another and to the wider UU community.

Beyond his work in Religious Education, Shawn loves reading, writing, and attending a good drag show. But perhaps his most notable passion is football—during the season, you’ll often find him proudly sporting his team jersey on Sunday mornings.
