Paying Attention: What is in Your Cup?

In a wisdom tale, Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh tells us the bump in the road doesn’t create what spills out of the cup we are carrying. Instead it reveals what is already inside. The question is not about who bumps us rather, “What am I carrying in my cup?”

Kids' Chapel on Zoom

Join Nancy Slocum, Director of Religious Exploration for Children and Youth for a “Kids’ Chapel” via Zoom on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. This program is geared for elementary school-aged children and will provide a little time to connect and share with each other. We still have a Time for All Ages during our online worship service which starts at 10:30 a.m., and encourage children to participate in the worship service through that point.

If you are a parent of a child or children in our Religious Exploration program and have not received the login information, please email Nancy at dir.re@tahomauu.com and she will send you the info.

The TUUC Social Justice Committee invites you to an information session about joining Vote Forward’s Letter Writing Campaign. Bring your enthusiasm and learn how to make a difference from home in this year’s general election!

Vote Forward’s mission is to “empower grassroots volunteers to help register voters from under-represented demographics and encourage them to vote.” This year, its goal is to send 10 million personalized letters to identified infrequent voters in designated “Super States.” The letters will all be mailed one week before the election – the “Big Send.”

Vote Forward has a very organized campaign, and you’ll add your voice to the letters you write telling recipients “Why I Vote.” This is a great way to participate in our national election while practicing social distancing.

Will this really work? Yes!

In a randomized controlled trial in the special election for U.S. Senate in Alabama in 2017, turnout among letter recipients was 3.9 percentage points higher than turnout in the control group. (3.4 percentage points after controlling for gender, age, and other factors). This is big! It appears to be one of the most effective known tactics to boost turnout.

Think about it – are you more likely to open a hand-written letter from a mysterious stranger or answer a phone call from a mysterious stranger?

Our 5th Principle is “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.”  Participating in our democracy is not only about our fifth principle. As UUs, our deepest beliefs are a life-giving, life-saving, life-sustaining alternative to the narratives and policies of domination, supremacy, exceptionalism, and exploitation that are on the rise.

If you can’t join us this Sunday, you can also sign up and participate at  https://votefwd.org/uu

Questions? Contact Laura Gardner or email the Social Justice Committee at SJCTahomaUU@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing you Sunday and sharing our stories of “why we vote” with citizens across the country.
