Social Justice Discussion + ACTION on Zoom
The Social Justice Committee (SJC) of TUUC invites you to join the Social Justice Discussion + ACTION Group which will spend two months each on five Social Justice issues: Housing Justice, Immigrant Justice, Racial Justice, Environmental Justice, and LGBTQIA+ Justice. We will LEARN the first month and ACT the second month. We will discuss a book on the social justice topic and identify an ACTION we can take – either individually, as a small group or as a congregational activity. The Discussion Group will meet alternate months starting Wednesday, November 17 on Zoom (third Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.) AND on Sunday, November 21 in the TUUC Sanctuary (third Sundays from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.). Both options will be available until the building fully reopens, so you have an option to meet either in-person or online for this program. Register in advance for the November 17 Zoom meeting at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcsdOygpzwtGNN39EZDs92wJSqOGuaxZOKO The Action Group will meet alternate months starting in December – time and location will be dependent on the ACTION. NOTE: Indoor in-person meetings are limited to eight participants per TUUC Indoor Gathering Guidelines. Housing Justice is the first issue. We will discuss the book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond in November and take ACTION to support our local homeless community in December. Evicted description: “Set in the poorest areas of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the book follows eight families struggling to pay rent to their landlords during the financial crisis of 2007–2008”. The SJC has borrowed a Book Club Kit from the Tacoma Public Library and has 14 copies of the book. Email the SJC at SJCTahomaUU@gmail.com to arrange pick-up of the book. It is also available in various formats at both Pierce County and Tacoma Public Libraries. To register, email the SJC at SJCTahomaUU@gmail.com. Please indicate whether you prefer a Zoom or in-person meeting. For more information, contact Laura Gardner. |
