Safe Shelter for All

As UUs, we are called to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of all people, including our unhoused neighbors. Most of us want to reduce – or eliminate – the numbers of unhoused and unsheltered people living on the street. But our goals can be hindered by confusion over the causes of homelessness and who is homeless. Theresa Power-Drutis and Rosemary Powers from the Tacoma-Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness join us this Sunday to dispel the myths and misconceptions that prevent us from building the programs that will house people.
Theresa Power-Drutis, Ph.D., is co-executive director of New Connections, a non-profit agency that operates two small shelters for formerly incarcerated women. She serves on the Board of the League of Women Voters of Tacoma/Pierce County and is a member of the Steering committee and the Safe Sites 4 All committee of the Tacoma Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness.  Theresa is a certified mediator and a long-time member of an intentional community located in the Hilltop district.

Rosemary Powers, Ph.D., is senior researcher for New Connections, a re-entry program assisting formerly incarcerated women, and is a member of the New Connections Board.  She is active in the Tacoma Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness, and serves on the Board of the Tacoma/Pierce County League of Women Voters.  She was a professor of sociology at Eastern Oregon University, retiring in 2016 to live and volunteer in the G. Street community of Tacoma’s Hilltop.

On Sunday, March 27, we will have a multi-platform service. A limited number of people can register to attend in person, OR folks can still attend via our online Zoom option. Those attending in person will follow our in-person gathering guidelines including wearing high-quality face masks. Registration is required, so that we can manage the number of people in the sanctuary and follow our gathering guidelines. No separate in-person programs for children and no nursery care, although children are welcome with their parents in the sanctuary.
